How to improve writing skills for IELTS EXAM

In IELTS exam, writing skills are the most essential as well as judgmental skills to judge the language proficiency of students.  To ace writing skills, students need a smart strategy to enhance their language skills to excel in IELTS exam.

In this write-up, we will focus on important tips to enhance writing skills for IELTS exam.

 1. Recognize the on time

If you are a dedicated candidate and are writing for the Academic or General Test, or you’re on Task 1 or Task 2, it is essential to understand specifically what the prompt is asking you to do. If you are writing a letter then you should be able to make out the register (formal or informal) and also know about the acceptable salutations and closing of the letter. If you writing an opinion essay then you should be able o identify both sides of the issues. On contrary, if you are on describing processes or graphs then you should first make out what the graph depicts and then try to recognize the main trends and useful feature to compare. You can make a proper outline for your paper if you have made a proper mindset for the task.

2. Put up an outline

Before writing, it is important to build an outline. It is because outline is very imperative as it will save your time and keep you focused during your writing. It will also help you not to divert away from the topic. Beside this, an outline will systematize your ideas in an appropriate order. To be specific, a good outline implies that you are focusing on language you are using (vocabulary and sentence structure) rather than the presented ideas in your writing. It is important to discuss the detailing of the outline.

While writing introduction, the students should start by writing a thesis statement (Writing Task 2) or important points. The thesis statement will be motivating force behind your entire essay. In this way, every paragraph will relate back and support it successfully. While writing Task 1, the students should manage the introduction in such a way that they can relate to the information asked through charts/graphs/diagrams (Academic Task 1) and also the purpose of writing the letter (General Task 1).

While writing the body paragraphs, the outline should only depict the main topic for the paragraph and the evidence to be used. If appropriate (Task 2), the students should also be able to show the body paragraph is supporting thesis statement in appropriate way. The conclusion can be described as summary of your argument or restatement.  Therefore, it is not essential to write anything in the outline for your conclusion. The formal conclusion may or may not be essential for letter writing (General Task 1).

  3. Originate with the best impression

While organizing opinion essay and writing the outline, the students should decide the order in which they are going to exhibit their ideas. If students are going to start with the strongest body paragraph then they are going to create first as well as good impression in the mind of reader.

4. Clearness in thoughts

In IELTS exam, the intellect and aptitude of students is counted by clarity of ideas he has depicted in his writing skills. The language has to be cohesive while the structure of the sentences and paragraphs should be framed efficiently and carefully. You should support your answer with suitable examples so that the idea conveyed by you becomes clearer and can be easily understood by the reader.

5. Pay consideration on language rather than length

In IELTS Test, the major focus of students should be on the language in writing a paragraph or sentence. The students should not be too expressive if word limit is less or points are more. The stress should be more on the language and points rather than on the length of the passage. The paragraph should have valid and strong points in the body of the matter. You should be skillful in writing it with strong usage of vocabulary. The students should be familiar with typical words which have been frequently used in their learning sessions. The usage of cohesive words and phrases should be done accurately. This will enhance your writing skills and will impress the reader, if your write-up is concise with interconnected arguments.

6. Proof-reading of write-up is significant

After writing up the entire write-up, it is important to proof-read to check the mistake or flaw in the language structure. You should concentrate hard on the words used, their spelling and its usage in different contexts as it matters most in making it a good write-up. It must be noted carefully that decisive parameters to award marks on language writing is usage and spellings that can be corrected, if students revises or proofreads well, before submitting it to the exam superintendent.

We hope that these tips will help you in enhancing your writing skills for IELTS exam.
